Nancy Foxworthy Graft


Nancy V. Graft, former University of Dayton bursar and long-time Franklin resident, died of cancer Saturday, March 31, 2001 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. She was born in Indianapolis November 16, 1933, the daughter of Theodore and Dorothy Foxworthy. After serving as the Valedictorian for the Arsenal Tech High School class of 1951 in Indianapolis, she was offered academic scholarships at several colleges and universities. She attended the University of Cincinnati School of Business until 1953, when she was married to Jack Graft, formerly of Middletown, Ohio, on the nationally televised Bride and Groom Show. The marriage ended in 1980.

Mrs. Graft returned to school in the late 1960's and received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Miami University in 1970. She began a 27-year career at the University of Dayton, where she obtained her Master of Business Administration in 1977. During this time she first served as Credit Manager, then Assistant Bursar, and finally Bursar until her retirement in 1998. From 1998 until 2000, she took a part-time, post-retirement position as Special Assistant to the Vice President of Financial Affairs.

In September, 2000, Mrs. Graft moved to Brunswick, Maine to be with her daughter's family.

An avid reader, Mrs. Graft enjoyed membership in the Ten O'clock Scholars, a book circle in Franklin, Ohio. She was active in the Franklin and Middletown Orders of the Eastern Star, and Order of Amaranth. She belonged to the First Presbyterian Church of Franklin, and the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Springboro, singing in the choir and serving as Clerk of Session for many years. She became a member of the Mid-Coast Presbyterian Church in Topsham, Maine in October, 2000. Her other interests included needlework, word puzzles, travel, music, and the arts.

Mrs. Graft was predeceased by an infant son, Matthew, in 1967 and is survived by her daughter, Jan Cox, son-in-law Tony Cox, grandsons Keith and Kevin Carlon, all of Brunswick, Maine; a brother, David Foxworthy, sister-in-law Socorro Foxworthy, and nephew Phillip of New York; nephew Jose De Jesus of Concord MA, nephew Christopher Foxworthy of Farmington, ME, and niece Pamela Foxworthy of Hackensack, NJ; former sisters- and brothers-in-law Jeanne and Bill Berry of Franklin, Alice and Ken Keister of Monroe, and Mary Grimes of Middletown; and many other cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

A memorial service celebrating Mrs. Graft's life will be held at the Immaculate Conception Chapel at the University of Dayton this Friday, April 20, at 10:00 a.m.; reception with the family to follow in the Kennedy Union Torch Lounge. Memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Graft's name to the New England Division of the American Cancer Society, Brunswick, ME 04011.
