Howard L. Longshore, Jr. Age 88 years, of Indianapolis, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2006, after an extended illness. He was born August 5, 1917 in Elkhart, IN to Howard L. and Eleanor Peterson Longshore, Sr., who preceded him in death. Howard graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1935 and then attended DePauw University in Greencastle graduating with an A. B. Degree in 1939. He also received a M.S. Degree in Education and School Administration from Butler University in 1952. He started teaching at Tech High School in 1940 and married Rosaline Petrovich August 16, 1941. Mr. Longshore entered the U.S. Navy during WW II and served 3 12 years as a Lieutenant. He then returned to Tech High School where he taught History and Social Studies and later became the Head of the Social Studies Department and Vice-Principal, before being named Principal in 1963, where he served until 1970. He also served as Head Football Coach from 1947 through 1956, and the football stadium at Tech High School was recently renamed the "Howard Longshore Stadium". After serving as Principal, he became Supervisor of Planning for the Indianapolis Public Schools, retiring in 1979. Howard was a longtime member of Old Bethel United Methodist Church and it's Senior Fellowship Group, The Retired IPS Administrators, and the Pleasant Run Old-Timers Golf Club. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 18, 2006 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel, 5377 E. Washington St, and Thursday, January 19, from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m. at Old Bethel United Methodist Church, 7995 E. 21st St.. Surviving is a son, Donald Longshore, wife Peggy; daughter, Kathie Zink; sister, Janet Jox, husband Allen; two grandchildren, Gregory Longshore and Todd Zink; and two great-grandchildren, Emily Zink and Alexander Smith. His loving wife of 60 years, Rosaline, preceded him in death May 17, 2002, and his brother, Jack Longshore, preceded him in death in 2000. Memorial contributions in Howard's memory may be made to Arsenal Tech H.S. Alumni Association or to the Old Bethel United Methodist Church.
